Background

As per the CSR Policy of ACC, the Damodar Cement Plant is expected to work actively in areas of preventive health and sanitation, education, skills for employability, livelihoods and income generation, waste resource management and water conservation for host communities for enhancing Human Development Index. In consonance with the stated policy, a host of CSR programs are underway in the project area of the plant.

Intervention

ACC CSR in recognition of the over whelming evidence that majority of our schools are not appropriately teaching has decided to shift its CSR approach in the elementary school sector from providing school infrastructure to concentrating resources on improving learning outcomes. While the traditional approach of provisioning benches, boundary walls, minor repairs and other infrastructure will not completely stop, the push is for ensuring that the children in the schools under the ACC CSR ambit have grade specific reading, writing and numeracy skills.

Services

The study gives a detailed account of the baseline learning level status of the students, the strategic road map, the KPIs/indicators to be tracked and the institutional mechanism for implementation. The suggestions have been accepted for implementation and are being rolled out across all government schools in the ACC CSR catchment of the three plants. The assessment tested a sampled of 223 students across 8 schools in 5 villages on basic and curricula specific reading ,writing and comprehension pertaining to mathematics, language (English, Bangla/Hindi) & General Studies.
