Baseline and Strategic Intervention for Improving Elementary School Education under CSR intervention of ACC Sindri Cement Plant – Every Child Makes the Grade

Background

ACC Limited is driven by the inherent need of providing products and solutions that will create an impact in the economic, social and institutional sectors. Through its CSR initiative Vidya Utkarsh Program, it wishes to improve the learning outcomes of students in elementary (primary) schools in its CSR catchment villages of the Sindri Cement Plant in Jharkhand.

Intervention

ACC Limited in recognition of the fact that overwhelming evidence that the majority of our schools are faltering in ensuring desired learning outcomes; has decided to shift its CSR intervention in the elementary schools from providing school infrastructure to concentrating resources on improving learning outcomes. Under the ACC’s Vidya Utkarsh Program, Sindri Cement Plant wishes to improve the learning outcomes of students in elementary (primary) schools in its CSR villages.

Services

The primary objective of elementary education is to develop the ability to read and write and gain basic numeracy skills. The baseline assessment tested the reading, writing and general awareness level of the students studying in class V in the schools located in the CSR catchment villages of ACC Sindri Cement Works. Apart from assessing the basic reading and arithmetic ability, an attempt was made to gauge children’s ability to understand, express, think critically and solve problems. Recommendations were also suggested that would impact all the primary schools in the CSR catchment villages that fall under the ambit of ACC Sindri.
