Background

ACC Limited committed to the national programme of ‘padhe bharat, badhe bharat’, to improve quality of education across primary schools in India. At ACC Chaibasa Cement Plant, the CSR projects address all major thrust areas enunciated in the ACC CSR policy document. One particular area in which Chaibasa Cement Works has put significant investment is in primary education in the CSR project villages.

Intervention

ACC Chaibasa in its CSR approach in the elementary schools in the catchment area apart from providing infrastructure has also concentrated its resources on improving learning outcomes. While the traditional approach of provisioning benches, boundary walls, minor repairs, and other infrastructure will not completely stop, the push is for ensuring that the children in the schools under the ACC CSR ambit have grade-specific reading, writing and numeracy skills.

Services

The baseline assessment tested the reading, writing and general awareness level of the students studying in class II and V in the schools located in the CSR catchment of Chaibasa Cement Works. Apart from basic reading and arithmetic ability, an attempt was made to gauge children’s ability to understand, express, think critically and solve problems.
